Naturally the tower is the target venue, and remains impressive in hommage to its big brother over the channel. Pier walks are bracing and one can ignore or otherwise the temptations? of the 'entertainment'.
The faded glory of a huge Art Decor project on the sea front to the north end worth a visit for photos. Some great Wetherspoons for the less snobbish.

Saw a touring exhibition of Louise Bourgeois (a Tate Modern exhibition) which was excellent. Lovely light gallery space, welcoming but not intrusive staff. There's an upstairs which was closed when I went.

Gallery has a ramp to the front door, current exhibition is all on the ground floor, there are lightweight stools visitors can borrow.
One curious exhibit is wig stands with face coverings made of many strips of leather - artist's response to covid.
Still life old and new includes an intriguing video of melting cheese.

The intriguing words on the roof "Blackpool stands between us and revolution" encouraged me to go in, where I saw exhibits by Tony Heaton sculptor and disability activist. Materials used - marble, neon lights, wheelchair parts, charity collection tins. I did not find the sculptures attractive, but their intention is to wake the viewer up to disability issues. The captions were too coy to say the four-letter word the white gloves were finger spelling.
Staff helpful. Gallery also has artistic cards on sale.

I had the priviledge of meeting one of the artists (Tom Ireland) whose work in neon now adorns the roof of the gallery. I expressed an interest in the piece and was told to come in the following day to meet him. His explanation of the piece was a real insight and added so much to the experience.

What a beautiful venue and how friendly, approachable and fascinating are the gallery personell I got to meet at our visit today.
My partner and I popped into the building for only a few minutes today as the gallery was being prepared for the next exciting exhibition, but we wanted to see if the gallery would allow us a quick look around the venue.
We both wanted to admire the architecture and exhibit spaces and we left incredibly impressed. A massive amount of time and effort has been put into making the interior of this building a haven for lovers of art everywhere.
I was very lucky to get to speak to two incredibly welcoming gallery personell who were both enthusiastic to answer some questions I had about the art scene in Blackpool. Their knowledge of the local area, history and culture in Blackpool was second to none. It was like a private tour of Blackpools past and what potential changes might be occurring in Blackpools future.
It was fascinating getting to hear about Blackpools ever expanding contemporary art spaces and how the gallery was planning to host some of Blackpools up-and-coming visuals artists who were becoming recognised for their work.
I also got to learn more about Blackpools mill history and how the various attractions and leisure venues in the city had served labourers of the past and the complex dynamics of who owned and who operated the impressive venues we know today (Blackpool Tower, for example.)
I cannot tell you how much I appreciated the conversation I got to have with the two venue/exhibition personell and my partner and I can't wait to return to one of the many future exhibitions.
My only regret is I hadn't considered that there may have been a way I could have provided a small donation for the gallery. I ended up having to rush back to our car and it slipped my mind to provide a donation - pretty tacky of me and my sinvwre apologies for that oversight.
A huge thank you for taking the time with us today, keep up the incredible work!!!

When I went in I borrowed one of the folding stools so I could sit to study my favourite drawings. There was work by Rachel Goodyear, drawings and an animation - sinister and surrealist images. Also paintings and sketches by Patti Mayor. The exhibition was well laid out and the captions told me as much as I wanted to know.

The Grundy is listed as holding some interesting works of art by first rate artists, however, do not plan a journey as they will not be on public view. The policy is to exhibit works from the permanent collection 'in support ' of temporary exhibitions. Currently this is Patti Mayor - no, I hadn't heard of her still less knowingly seen any of her work before. Suffragette studied at the Slade. Ten out of ten for 'woke' perhaps a shaky five for her art, that is unless you have a burning enthusiasm for accomplished but dull Edwardian sketches and oils. Blackpool deserves a much better curatorial policy to place the good art it holds on public display. If you are visiting Blackpool then save yourself thirty minutes of your life and give the Grundy a miss. You'll lose nothing.
