St. Edward King and Martyr takes its name from the 9th century King of East Anglia crowned in 855 AD and killed by the Great Heathen Army in 859AD. A church has been recorded on this site since 1292, the present one replacing its predecessor destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666. It was constructed between 1670-79 to designs by Sir Christopher Wren with a tower ornamented with flaming urns as a memorial to the fire itself. It has witnessed the marriage of the essayist Addison in 1716 and a riot in 1868 following a sermon denouncing the traders of Lombard Street.

This is a typical City of London Church (burnt down in 1666 and rebuilt to the designs of Christopher Wren). It is still consecrated but is now home to the London Centre for Spirituality. Lovely inside.

This church was rebuilt its mediaeval predecessor was destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666 to a design by Sir Christopher Wren. The orientation of the church is unusual, with the altar to the north not the east as in most churches. The technical designation is Church of England, but since 2001 it has been the home of the London Centre for Spirituality. It is located in Lombard Street not far from the Bank junction in the centre of the City of London.

This Anglican church from the unusual set having the apse to the North and not to Jerusalem, has a history of destruction and reconstruction until today.
In fact, built in MCCC century and dedicated to Saint Edmund, destroyed several times including in the great fire of 1666, has always been rebuilt after the bomb of 1917 (see inside) that was partially damaged.
The dedication is to the St Emind, King of East Anglia in 869 a.c.
The tower, with an allusion on Great Fire of '66, is "more chinese than italian" and it merits a watching.
It is part of the high spiritual cultural heritage and ethnic of London and although small can not be ignored especially being located on Lombard street.
