“Transgression”, subtitled “Life in the Aftermath of the Eocene”, is on at the White Bear Theatre in Kennington, south London, until 27 January 2024. Go and see it. Highly recommended. It is written by my former colleague and good friend Loretta Monaco.
The Eocene (“New Dawn”) epoch lasted from 55 million years ago until 34m years ago. The oldest known fossils of most of the modern orders of mammals appear in this period. It was when brains began to grow.
Looking at our past, when does geology fade and archaeology come into its own? How far back do we go? Archaeology is vital in that it provides a unique perspective on what it is to be human — our past, present, how we live and how we shape and map the future.
The science of archaeology mirrors and complements the talking therapies we have developed in recent history to make sense of and attempt to understand our lives, social interactions and histories.
The “archaeology” in this play digs up the London past of five individuals in the 1990s — warts and all. We are exposed to the layers of a dysfunctional family setting of two therapists. One is a traditional psychotherapist, the other a drama therapist interacting with couples. Formerly a couple, an earlier “transgression” has torn them apart.
Their son— the archaeologist at the heart of the drama — digs up pottery fragments from vanished civilisations and the dim and distant past. He claims to have learnt a great deal about the human condition in the process.
But he is very young and immature. Life gets complicated with the father’s girlfriend and there are repeat transgressions, dramas writ large and histrionics. The people are not really likeable.
The play is set in 1996, the year Dolly the Sheep became the first mammal cloned from an adult somatic cell. Science moves on, but we individuals seem rooted in the past and the day to day, often repeating old mistakes.
I am old enough to remember the 1990s as yesterday, but need to be reminded that it isn’t the recent past. It is almost 30 years ago. The past is a different country.

Just saw a really amazing show here! It was called Generation Games, I think it still has a few more performances this week. Love to come here, the pub has a great atmosphere and the food is super good, especially their chips! Definitely coming here again. Great location too :)

We went to a play at the White Bear and thought we had booked a table but the booking hadn’t been given to the restaurant. However the staff were brilliant and found us a table quickly. We had a great meal with excellent service. Really recommend this as a venue to eat and visit the theatre.

The White bear has long been a venue for interesting fringe theatre shows in the steamer just above to Gastropub of the same name.
Take off your Corn Flakes is the current show, a sensitive and well acted one man show portraying the impact of dementia.
Book a show and eat in the pub after.

Nice food overall if slightly raw veg (it was very busy). Good atmosphere and friendly staff. One of the better pubs in the area

I visit a lot of pub theatres and I went to the White Bear last week to see Macbeth the Musical, which was FAB! There's lots I like about this theatre. The first is it's as close to the tube station as the website says it is, which means that despite being way out in Kennington, it's pretty easy to get to. I liked the pub, which is HUGE and sells a wide range of food and drink. But above all, the black box that is the (and almost every) pub theatre is comparatively comfortable and cool to sit in. I look forward to going back there soon.

Went to see Southside Player's performance of Splendour. It's a great intimate space and they let you take the glasses in. Will keep an eye out for other shows as the food and the ambience was excellent too.

We went to see the show Nor Women Neither. What a performance! It was witty, funny and well written, performed and directed. the theatre is above the pub, so no noise from the pub and after the show a great place to eat. The cider is wonderful.

Very nice setup. Recently refurbished, good variety of beers on tap. Not particularly cheap considering its in a residential area, but worth paying a slight premium for such nice facilities
