My wife and I love visiting the Botanical Gardens. There is something different to see all through the seasons. It is so peaceful, and may I add, civilised!! Absolutely great for a single person, couples and children. There is so much to learn from the information provided and you can spend as much time there as you like. The nature aspect is wonderful with a bird hide giving you the opportunity to spot all types of birds as well as the squirrels. We don't normally frequent cafes, preferring to sit on a rock with a flask, however we do like completing our visit with a cuppa in the on site cafe. One of the main reasons for this is because of Leanne and her colleague. Such lovely friendly girls, always ready to have a chat and a good laugh!! A pleasure and full credit to them. Thank you, Joni and Brian.

While you should know going at this time of year will be seeing many plants dying back and not looking as colourful as it is in Spring & Summer months, but the walks and the autumnal feeling walking through the many colourful leaves should leave you with big smiles.. a beautiful time of year and it’s peaceful. The cafe is a great meeting place and for us was a first visit and def won’t be the last. Leanne & Darren were on the ball with information and busy with the cafe that was full, yet still found time to sort my allergy foods and have a high standard of food preparation and all was presented very good indeed.. The car park is free with an overspill park on the opposite side, but there is a charge for entry of the gardens with concession for the older.. we spent 3.1/2 hours there and hope to be back in the summer to see some full blooms and for another treat in the Cafe. .. Big thumbs up to Leanne & Darren. 👌👋

Having visited a few botanical gardens i have to say this was one was poor. Pretty unkempt with very lityle of interest - except the greenhouses. Its really just a woodland with the odd tree of interest here and there. Save your £5, go forwalk in the countryside instead.

Durham University recognises the importance of a Biodiversity culture. This ensures that wildlife can prosper, help our staff, students and visitors study and live within an engaging and healthy environment.
Within the Durham University Estate we have ringfenced areas to allow this to occur naturally.
We were part of the No Mow May initiative where after the Daffodils dies back, orchids were allowed to grow along with other wildflower. Due to this initiative we have approximately 35 wild orchids enhancing our estate.
We are committed to not using pesticides in the Botanic Garden and also are committed to creating habitats for biodiversity which is within our 10 year plan. This does mean the garden is less regimental and neat but I would like to include a copy of our Biodiversity Strategy document to highlight the beauty and benefits of adopting this.

The ‘garden’ is more like a park - trees, grass, 2 or 3 statues, but barely any flowers. Although the grass had been cut, we felt I most of the site had been only minimally maintained - several areas were very unkempt, and the ‘experiment’ areas mostly looked either dead or full of weeds. Fine for a walk, but nothing special and not worth £5 entry - many parks are nicer.

Unfortunately, this time of year our wildflowers, pinetum and North American arboretum begin to fade. The reason why we leave the areas unkept for a certain period of time is so that we can re-use the seeds for them to flower again next year for our visitors to enjoy again!
Furthermore, some of our areas are left unkept as we will start letting our sheep in the meadow eat the grass as part of our conversation strategy.
We do appreciate your feedback and I will pass this onto our operations team at the Botanic Garden.

Botanic gardens in Durham is a beautiful location with loads to do with the kids.
The welcome was warm and friendly and the kids were free entry. We only paid for us adults.
Maps were provided and off we went.
The grounds are truly amazing and so peaceful to walk around the whole of the grounds. Plenty of Picnic tables located around the grounds. The quiz’s and discovering all new things about plants was really interactive for us all. The kids had the opportunity to feed the fish, which they loved.
There is a cafe and a small gift shop both reasonably priced. You can eat both inside or outside. We really enjoyed our visit and will be back.

We visit the Botanic Gardens regularly. The gardens have been tranformed over the past five years,. It is uplifting to walk around them. The cafe is very good with a variety of tasty snacks and excellent staff. It is particularly nice to sit outside and enjoy the summer planting and views. Well worth visiting.

Gardens enjoyable but very wild and unkempt in places- not clear what was being grown/trialled in those areas.
Café definitely needs more staff. One person serving coffee, food, taking orders and payments for shop goods as well as food makes for long waits.

I have been to the gardens several times and used the café, today my sister and I came specifically for lunch because previously we had some lovely sandwiches and hoped to have the same again. There were different options to last time we were there but we decided on the ploughman's sandwiches with salad, to be honest it was awful and not worth the price, it was just cheese slices with pickle in brown bread (no choice of white or brown), the salad was chunks of hard green lettuce starting to go brown, the crisps were hard and stale and the tomatoes like golf balls and the whole thing was icy cold including the bread and obviously just out of the fridge ready made up. Very disappointing and we left most of it. Experiences like that sadly put one off going again because it's not cheap by any means. The prepacked sandwiches that the café used to sell were far superior to today's offering.

We are sorry to hear about your disappointment with the sandwiches you purchased from the café.
We have changed our sandwich range and appreciate your feedback regarding this particular sandwich and we will address the poor quality of the salad and crisps with the café team.
We are very disappointed that on this occasion we have not met your expectations and had the café team been aware at the time of purchase we would have made every effort to rectify this for you immediately.

We've been long time visitors to (and in the past, exhibitors at) Durham Botanic Garden and it sadly seems to have been receiving much less TLC than in the past. Many areas are overgrown with ferns etc. and apart from the trees, there seems less of interest than there used to be. The coffee shop, whilst still serving great coffee, is less appealing than in the past. We used to enjoy freshly made sandwiches etc which are now no longer available. Having just renewed our annual passes I can only hope that things improve.

Visited for the first time and I was really impressed, despite the rain. There were some stunning trees, shrubs, trees and plants and I suspect they'd look even more spectacular in the sunshine.
The displays were beautiful and it was great to see close up, different species from round the world too.
I loved the area with cactus and succulents from around the globe and the fish were great to see. They also had tarantulas but I kept well away from their display case, having a bit of a spider fear.
The coffee shop seemed to have a good selection too.
Just a couple of negatives for me. Some of the species are either unlabelled or not clearly labelled. I would have liked to know what I was looking at.
My main negative is that cash is not accepted and it's card only.
My card wouldn't work and I had to rely on my friend to pay for my visit and cup of tea.
If I'd been on my own I would have had a wasted journey as they wouldn't have accepted
cash.

Our gardens really do look beautiful at this time of year.
Our family of insects, arachnids and other creepy-crawlies stretches from around the world, with tropical beetles and millipedes accompanying scorpions from the dry heat of the desert.
Our cafe area is now cashless. However, I will share your feedback with the team to see whether this is something that we can possibly change going forward.
We hope to see you again soon.
