Parikrama(Circuit) of Kinnaur Kailash trek is one of the most strenuous trek in Himachal Pradesh. The trek starts from Charang village and ends at Chitkul village in Baspa valley of Kinnaur. Charang-La aka Charang-Chitkul pass forms a drainage divide between Tidong valley and Baspa valley of Kinnaur. Tidong stream meets Satluj at Moorang whereas Baspa meets Satluj on its right bank at Karcham.

From the vantage points in Kalpa, you get to see the huge mountain ranges of Kinnaur Kailash which loom large onto you. At the very first sight of the mountains, enroute Reckong Peo, one would not be looking up towards the mountains, rather the mountains would be looking at you where ever you move. Both Reckong Peo and Kalpa are surrounded by the mighty Himalayan ranges. And very up close.
Initially you would not find the Kinner Kailash peak, although it is the highest peak of this range attaining a sheer height of 6050 m from sea level. However, with some reference of pictures you will be able to spot the Kailash Khand amidst other towering peaks surrounding it.
The Kailash Khand is a 80 ft high quartzite monolith perched on a rocky slab and refracts sunlight throughout the day in different colours. The locals say that mighty Shiva linga changes colours in 11 different shades throughout a perfect sunny day.
There is a 2-day trek to reach the Kailash Khand from Reckong Peo. Those who have done that says it's a difficult one albeit worthwhile.

The trek to Kinner Kailash starts from Pohari village near Rekong Peo of Kinnaur District. The first day of the trek starts after breakfast and is a relatively easy climb up the mountain. For about 3 Km the walk amidst apple orchards is pleasant. After this the trek in the forest gets difficult but manageable. We reached the bandara by dusk. The dhandara is just a big tin roofed shed and has little basic amenities. A kitchen is functional but you may have to supply rations for cooking. We were lucky to get some cooked rice and nothing to along with it. It is necessary to carry your sleeping bags and warm clothing and thermal inner wear. There are a couple of Dhabas nearby which offer tented accommodation at fancy rates. If the bhandara is full this is a better option. From here you get a clear view of Kinner Kailash. The view of the meadows and the sutlej valley are breathtaking. You could continue to climb to the gufa. Spending the night in the gufa is difficult as it is open and you may not find space to sleep overnight. The trek is along the river Sutlej and there a number of mini hydro electric generating stations along the route. The river is furious and rainfall makes it very dangerous and results in casualties while trying to cross the numerous streams on the way. It is most necessary to have a guide who knows the terrain and also would help in carrying your baggage. The second day of the trek starts early at 2.30 AM. From here there is no marked trail. You will reach Parvathi Kund at an altitude of 15000 ft. after 5-6 hrs trek. Seen from here Kailash looks like a trident. From here you will encounter huge boulders all along the route until you reach Kailash. The stretch of about 1 Km. has to be covered on all fours and for someone who has done little climbing it is very difficult without help. By noon we reached Kailash. at an altitude of about 19000 feet, the Shivling is a rock pillar balanced at the end of a 3 feet wide slab about 20 feet long. The wind speed here grows more in the afternoon. It is advisable to move on all fours to cover the 20 feet stretch to reach the Shivling. We offered our prayers and after about an hour, started to descend. Descending is as tough as the climb. We reached the bhandara at about 11 in the night. It was a non stop trek of 20 hours, with short breaks and an hour at the peak. We were served a cup of kichdi for dinner and rested for the night. The next morning we were lucky to get some tea as some supplies had arrived. The bhandara run by the Kailash Seva Samithi is a self help one and depends on volunteers. We had to clean the utensils and prepare tea ourselves.
Getting food on the way is very difficult. There are one or two dhabas offer noodles and parotas with tea. If you miss one on the way you will have to go hungry. You must carry your own drinking water as its not available en-route. You have to carry your torch, better to have a head torch. Rain coat is essential as the pilgrimage takes place in the monsoon months. This trek is not for the week and faint hearted.

Out of my all of the trekking expereinces to the mountains whether it is Uttarakhand or Himachal Pradesh,
the most mind blowing and most thrilling trekk was The Kinner Kailash Mahadeva Yatra..
I did it last year in the month of August, exactly in the starting of aug month.
I along with my friends went there.
We preffered to go through our bike from chandigarh to Kinnaur district,
Which is a very very beautiful districts of H.P.
It took around one day to reach our point from where we needed to go by foot.
We started the journey by foot around 1 in the noon.
We reached our first spot where we decided to take rest for the night and then leave for the upper trekk next day.
But believe me the first trekk of those 10 kms seemed like they were 20 kms.
It is because one has to go in the upwards direction there is no place where one can go i. Downwards direction.
There is shortage of water as well because you cannot carry that much water so one should carry Glucose d or any energy drink.
Next day around 6AM we left for the Kinner Kailash Mountain which was still 12 kms to walk up.
In between I was not even able to walk too steps.I was becoming tired very soon as tgere was a shortage of oxygen as well and it was natural as the height till that time on which I was around 15000 feet above the sea level.
We found a glaceir over ther in between our trekk. We needed to cross that.It was very slippery I had a stick along with me which helped me a lot over there and in the way as well because there was rainfall and way was slipper due to mud. Finally after crossing alot of hurdles I reached the Kinner Kailash top around 1:30 noon.
When I saw the Kinner Kailash Khand all the pains which I was feeling, tge tiredness which was there whatever the problem which I was facing suddenly Disappeared.
It was mesmerizing.
I dont even have words to describe that beauty to all of you guys whosoever would be reading this short story.
The height on that particular time was 22000 feet above the sea level which was a benchmark of my life.
I sat there. Kept on starring the Kinner Kailash Khand for a very long time.
Wind was blowing very fast over there we were not even abke to light a match stick ao a lighter to light Dhoop which we took along with us.
We echanted prayers of lord shiva for around 1 hour over there and then successfully said Boom Shankar that we have compketed this yatra though in the middle of the yatra many times I said
"dekhklenge yar gaurikund se wapus chal padenge"
But the guy who so ever was coming was saying
"Bhaiji ab toh thoda sa hi reh gaya hai,
Itna aa gaye toh ab toh darshan karke hi jaana"
These words at that time were my inspiration
I said it to me
"Sale jab itna aa gaya hai toh ab himmat mat haar
Jai shankar ki bol aur chup chaap chalta reh"
It was awesone experience.
I suggest all of you guys who lije treeking or is fond of trekking should visit that place .
YOU WILL DEFINITELY FIND ETERNAL PEACE AND THE ANSWERS OF ALL QUESTIONS WHICH NOBODY IS ABLE TO ANSWER YOU..

Solo is the best thing when you require to explore. August will be post rainy season and since we had been there in early June, cannot really help on that. Where are you traveling from and for how many days? Self driven? So let me know and can update you on that!
From which month yatra will start of kinner Kailash mahadev in 2018??
