This is a lovely forest reserve in the Cayo district with plenty to see and do for a long day-tour. We visited Caracol, Rio on Pools and Big Rock Falls. The road conditions are appalling so either have a 4WD with experience off-reading or just hire a guide. No, there is not ambiguity around that.

Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Preserve is exactly what its name states: miles and miles of nearly undeveloped pine forest and rugged hills, offering many natural attractions. Plan to spend several days exploring the sights of the area.

Awesome place you can adventure on your own! We started in the Rio Frío Caves and did the jungle hike in - so cool! Bring water and good footwear. Then, we went down to the pools to enjoy and eat our packed lunch. We ended at the Big Rock Waterfall - short hike in and out (it is steeper with trail stairs at some parts, just know) and gorgeous waterfall pools you can swim in! The view can’t be beat.

Neil and his lovely wife made out stay at this cozy resort well worth it. The meals that he put together were amazing. I've traveled the world and he has some amazing pizza as well as the shrimp ceviche. The cottage we rented was also amazing....more than enough space for my family. This is a must book if you're in the area.

On weekends Rio Frio Pools are crowded with picnickers and families playing in the pools. We went on a week day, and the place was virtually empty. Rough roads are being improved, and a bathroom/changing facility has recently been added. The covered viewing area/picnic tables were wonderful! We would love to return to this place.

We visited the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest with our excellent bird guide, Eric Tut. (Highly, highly recommend him - check out Birding in Belize, Paradise Expeditions.) The road getting there from San Ignacio is fairly rough in places (partly due to construction and partly due to poor road conditions.) The area is pretty and undeveloped. We used the Slate Creek Trail to walk out to an overlook that had an incredible view for miles. With the help of our bird guide, we saw birds ranging from the rufous-capped warbler and ivory-billed woodcreeper to the slaty-tailed trogon and king vulture.

Mountain Pine Ridge – untapped, uncrowded and natural beautiful. Getting to mountain pine ridge is not the easiest, but once there the drive becomes all worth it. You get to enjoy nature in all its splendour as your surrounded by lush pine forest. It’s a nature lovers paradise. Your day is consumed by going on nature hikes, birding and chasing waterfalls

Hi - on behalf of the group I just want to say thank you to Emil Gamez for an an amazing excursion at the caves and 4 waterfalls at Mountain pine ridge. We had so much fun!!!
You and your company, Bird Trekking, Belize delivered really well and exceeded our expectations.
It was my first ever trip within Belize where I had a tour guide and I must say I would surely do it again and I will recommend your service to everyone.
Thanks a lot! 🙏🏾🙏🏾

Went on birding tour with Paradise Expeditions. Great birds but mostly a respite from the flat, humid, bugginess of Latin America. (although look out for the no-see-ums at 1,000ft Falls)

Hi! I'm visiting the MPR for a day trip at the end of December. Any suggestions on what to wear/pack (or what you absolutely don't need) in a daypack?

Hey! Thank you for the review.
Did you have a tour guide when you explore MPR?

Hi, can you go to the mountain pine reserve on your own or take a guided your ? We are travelling from UK next week and have a rented a car while in san ignacio area. The tours at £90 plus tax per person seems quite expensive. At the same time, we do want to visit the caves and pools. Are we able to access this on our own ?

Yes you can access the waterfall and caves on your own. You'll need a 4WD to drive up there. You can get a guide map of the reserve where it tells you where the caves/pools are. Google maps is also your friend you can map out the destinations and print it and take it with you. My honest opinion, exploring it on your own is away better experience.

Hi,
I would like to know if we can go at Mountain Pine ridge Forest Reserve without guide, with our own car to visit big rock falls and Rio on pools ? Do you have to pay an entrance fee ?

Is there a zipline in the reserve?

Just went back through my pictures and found the sign for one of the zip line companies near the ridge - Calico Jack's.
Is there air conditioning at most of the resorts in the area? Is it necessary? We're planning a trip at beginning of November. Are bugs/mosquitoes an issue?

The only accommodations with AC in Mountain Pine Ridge is Kane Villas. It is cool at night so AC is not always necessary but it’s a nice option to have. There are bugs in MPR (as in any forest/jungle) but they affect everyone differently. Bring bug spray and you should be fine. It’s a beautiful part of the country. Fit it into your travel plans if time permits.

Hi -
My buddy Don and i will be arriving in Belize March 26th. We'd like to hike in MPR reserve but are wondering how to find a good guide to take us. What organizations take groups on the trails? Prefer hiking to horseback riding.
Thanks,
Wes

Did you do a tour to get to Mountain Pine Ridge or did you rent a car? Also, is it easy to navigate if you do choose to rent a car to get there?
