Info

COPROT is a beautiful camp on the edge of the jungle next to a wild stretch of beach. There are amazing people there and the wildlife opportunities are incredible and plentiful. The project focuses on the conservation of turtles here with huge efforts to survey them carried out along with regular beach cleans and a drive to improve recycling, having a recycling center on camp. I highly recommend the experience.

Thank you COPROT for this important, courageous work you are doing to protect turtles and raise awareness! Thank you for the once in a lifetime experience you made possible for my husband and me when we visited spontaneously in November 2021. It was deeply moving to sit by a sea turtle laying eggs and to see a little one being washed over by the waves at the start of its hopefully long life-journey. Even I, who cannot walk much, didn't feel being tired until after three hours, because I was so filled with the intensity of the experience.
The beautiful thing about COPROT is that there are always volunteers at the place and that the local communities are also included in the project so that they can be proud champions of sea turtles, too. It is so important to raise awareness among locals, tourists and world wide.
COPROT even offers to have dinner and spend the night after the evening walk at their place, if you like. Which is especially great for people who do not want to drive the bumpy roads when it is dark.

This was an absolute bucket list experience! From start to finish this organization is prepared and ready to host volunteers and people like us who could only stay for one night with our two kids ages 9 & 5.
We were greeted by one of the volunteers around 6 o’clock at night. They came to meet us at our car and gave us a tour, an orientation, and prepared a lovely meal for us. All of the volunteers were so welcoming and wanted us to have the best experience. We did a night patrol and saw a leatherback turtle laying eggs. We did the morning patrol and saw green sea turtle hatchlings. We also got to give the little baby goat a bottle and played with the ranch dog and cat in the morning!
Our lovely hosts also had our kids do some crafting and were so happy to answer all of our questions. I feel like we have met some of the most amazing and driven people on this stay. I am inspired by their experiences and their dedication to sea turtle conservation.

My 9 year old daughter is a budding marine biologist and conservationist. She’s been learning, studying, and volunteering about and with turtles since she could read. The team at COPROT was great. We joined for a morning patrol and she was able to help while she learned about the data collection and research. It was an awesome experience for her and she was so happy to spend the morning with like-minded people who were willing to explain every single thing they did, measured, and recorded. We didn’t see any baby turtles based on the timing, but we helped relocate a nest that was in danger, salvaged and cleaned a few after predation, and protected quite a few more. My daughter enjoyed learning how to distinguish between different species of turtle tracks and many other things that were very interesting and engaging to her. An awesome experience with a great team!!!

We joined Laura and Jay for the morning patrol which starts at 5:30am. Aside of the majestic beach views, you will experience something out of this world.

We saw traces of turtles that go out to the beach from the water to lay their eggs during the night and number of nests that were already discovered and recorded by the team earlier. Laura advised in advanced that the egg laying season is almost over, but we wanted to do this anyways. But we were albeit very lucky to find a nest in which hatchlings just made their way out that morning. So with Laura and Jays help we investigated the nest and found some little guys still in the nest. We provided a shadow to them to safely get into the water. It was really once in a lifetime experience.
Laura and Jay were very knowledgable and explained all the work they are doing to help the turtles of Osa, which is a great undertaking.
Small indicative donation is advised (USD25), but by all means donate away to support the work of these guys!
After returning to the area where the guys run their foundation, we had a brief coffee and fruit break before returning to the hotel.
Do not miss this great walk while enjoying the beautiful Osa.

We were at coprot on february 13th-14th. Turtles season is getting at it’s end by then. We arrived for just one minute when someone came from the beach because a nest was hatching (which doesn’t normally happen in the afternoon). The release of a baby turtle at sunset was just beautiful! 😍
In the evening we did a night tour. Unfortunately we didn’t see any turtles nesting but we saw some bioluminescence in the sea 🤩
The next morning we went on a beach patrol. We saw 2 nests hatching, found 2 new nests with eggs and we helped with the excavations. We really learned a lot! Thank you for your hospitality and the amazing experiences!!!

We went on a morning patrol with Laura and had an amazing and eye opening experience! We learned so much about what the organization does and the plight of the local sea turtles. Laura allowed us to actually help log the nests that were found and count the hatched eggs. She really made us part of the organization for a little while. We rescued a turtle and saw many more released that morning. Afterward we were invited to the camp and we got to talk with the volunteers and learn more about their experiences. HIGHLY recommend taking a tour!!

If you want to support a great cause and have an unforgettable experience, please visit Laura’s nonprofit for baby turtles and spay/neuter of the local dogs. We got to release with our own hands (gloved and carefully!) baby turtles as well as help other fledglings make it to the ocean from various nests on the 6km of beach Laura has the rights to protect. The volunteers and staff that work with Laura care greatly about the future of turtles and are working with the locals to try to employ them and teach them a different way to live off the jungle one that doesn’t depend on extracting resources from the park (gold, poaching, etc). If you go here you will be helping the community as well as the turtles. Please, please visit and support them! Laura is very responsive on What’s app - that is how we communicated with her. Her number is: +506 8456 9201. We were staying at Playa Pan Dulce (Matapalo) and it took us between 35-45 mins to get there. The drive was beautiful as well and Laura saw a tapir and her baby a few days before we got there walking down the road mid-a.m.! People also see Pumas often as well from the road, especially at night but our caretaker’s wife saw one the other day just near the turnoff for Matapalo.
