A stress free way to learn Spanish and travel. I stayed with a host family during my two weeks in Guatemala and it was so amazing to be able to practice what I learned in the classes. The excursions twice a week were also such a great way to explore lake atitlan and learn more about Guatemalan culture. My teacher Roxy was amazing and Eduardo helped organize a private car for my trip from the airport to Lake Atitlan.
One of my favorite parts was observing the children’s parade during Independence Day.

I totally recommend this entire experience of attending this Spanish Academy while living with a host family. Eduardo is amazing and can help you set everything up. It's accommodating, I learned a LOT in just 2 weeks, and my teacher (Eduardo #2) was really committed to helping me learn at a pace that was right for me. The attached pictures are my experience and view from my table (which is the view from ANY table)

TLDR: look no further, come and study Spanish at Guatemaya in San Pedro!
I’ve wanted to seriously learn Spanish for a long time, and a friend told me about San Pedro La Laguna. I’m so glad I chose Guatemaya! I’m not really a planner, and contacted Eduardo only two or three days before arriving here. He arranged everything perfectly, shuttle from Antigua, host family, my teacher etc. Super understanding, communicative & responsive. I booked for a week first and extended another week and he was extremely flexible about it. Logistics wise, everything worked out smoothly & perfectly.
Language learning wise, I grew extensively from knowing simple words on paper but no speaking to holding simple conversations about family, jobs, travels, day to day lives, future plans etc. I’m able to engage in most conversations as long as the other person can speak slowly and is patient with me. In the timespan of two weeks, I’m now very comfortable communicating all basic things about life. The curriculum here is pretty much student-centered, very motivating. Huge shoutout to my teacher, Roxana, or Roxy, tailors very specifically to my needs. We learn vocabularies, grammatical rules, sing songs in Spanish, talk about lives, play games, do fill-in-the-blank exercises and translation from English to Spanish. A great mixture of learning materials - four hours sounds a lot, but they do pass by fast.
However, the school is much more than learning Spanish. It’s also about learning local history and culture, building connections with the people. I built wonderful connections with all the teachers and students here. We make jokes all the time (I’m able to tell jokes in Spanish now! That’s how much I improved!). We go on textile & chocolate tours together, visit Panajachel, enjoy once-in-a-year fiesta. One night, all of us cooked together at the school, and sang and danced… was so much fun! Everything we experienced together makes me feel so connected with a foreign country and a foreign culture.
The connection I built with my host family is also wonderful. I was lucky enough to be hosted by Maria and Armando, who are both kind and beautiful souls. The food Maria prepared has been so delicious (in general, I’m pretty picky about what I eat, but I finish my plate each meal). Their daughters, Elenita & Brenda, shared with me their reggaeton playlist! We would sing titi me pregunto together after dinner! I feel soo welcomed and accepted into the family and the local community. I heard that some schools would have tens of students in one family. That to me would be so much harder to build such deep and meaningful relationship with the family members.
Last but not least, the town itself is amazing. Before coming, my friends back home were concerned about safety for me. But San Pedro is super safe and fun. People on the street are kind, where strangers would smile and greet you on your way home. The weather here is perfect (for me), my skin normally gets bad when I travel, but here it’s perfectly fine. And the lake, oh god, soo gorgeous. I love sitting at a cafe and studying and watching boats passing by in the morning. I can easily spend months here - originally I wanted to travel to multiple places, but ended up just wanting to stay here for longer!
I wish I came here before my previous Latin American trips. My Spanish improved so much, I learned so much about Latino culture, and I now have a family here always welcoming me to come back! I would recommend anyone to come study at Guatemaya and you won’t ever regret a single bit!
Thank you Eduardo, Roxy, Lisa, Rosa, Idalia, Jose, Eduardo dos, Maria, Armando, Elenita, y Brenda (and all the names I forgot, excuse my horrible memory) for everything :)

I recommend the Spanish School Guatemaya 100%. It is my second time coming to the school. Director Eduardo is very responsive, fair, and accommodating. Be sure to request Rocsana or Freddy as teachers. Last time I had Rocsana & she is truly one of a kind - she is patient, very funny, and has so much experience. An amazing teacher and person. If you need a ride anywhere (from the airport or anywhere else in Guatemala) please request Clemente. He is reliable, honest, very safe, and an excellent referral that the school has. There are so many schools in San Pedro - this one is the best by far.

I am not new to teaching and learning. I have taught for the past thirty years, mentored teachers and in the past taught English for the British Council. What was new to me was learning a language myself. Having been able to take a mid career break to travel and learn Spanish, I was recommended San Pedro de Laguna and the Guatemaya Spanish Academy. My experience has been fantastic and has far exceeded my expectations. I originally booked three weeks and then, after a short break, extended. I have received first class lessons with a fantastic teacher in a beautiful location and have been made welcome by the school, my host family and the local community. I have gone from knowing a few basic words and sentences in Spanish to being able to hold conversations, discuss topics, swap between tenses and to understand jokes! I have worked hard over these two months. My teacher has matched my enthusiasm and determination to learn and has been devoted to my success. I opted to take one to one lessons for four hours a day and to follow the school's curriculum. My lessons have been fully immersive in Spanish. I have been taught in Spanish and used the language from the outset. We have covered all skills with the emphasis on communication. There has been a lot of laughter, a lot of fun as well as getting to grips with grammatical structures. I am truly thrilled with my progress and feel blessed to be taking this gift of language with me.
During part of my stay here I lived with a wonderful host family organised by the school. They were incredibly patient, kind and willing to spend time in helping me communicate with them. As my language skills grew I became better able to understand and to be part of conversations and family life. Staying with a host family gave me the opportunity to practice my learning from class and motivated me to express myself better and to learn more. My host family also gave me a beautiful insight into family life here in San Pedro and into their Mayan customs and culture.
Guatemaya Spanish Academy has my heartfelt recommendation. I can not recommend them enough. The school has created a space where all are welcomed and valued. The team are professional, outward looking and dedicated to building community, to preserving their Mayan culture and heritage and to contributing to the local families and the local communities here in San Pedro. When I return to the UK I want to continue my learning with Guatemaya on-line. Many students also return here in person to the school to continue and advanced their studies. I hope in the future to be one of them.

Best Spanish School at the Lake!! I studied here for over a month. All of the teachers are experienced, skilled & meticulous. I love this school because they put an emphasis on empowering their community and embracing Mayan culture. All of the teachers know and can teach about the Mayan culture- I learned a lot about it from my Spanish teacher and guest teachers who came in to teach about it. Guatemaya offer great activities: salsa dancing, hiking, chocolate tours, etc.

Guatemaya Spanish Academy provided me with an incredible four-week learning experience. I thoroughly enjoyed my time here, thanks to the diverse range of activities and snacks available. I’m a foodie, and the daily provision of coffee and tea was a delightful touch that added to the welcoming atmosphere. The teaching methods were well-structured and effective, making the learning process enjoyable and productive. The teachers here are like friends, incredibly humorous and witty. I absolutely loved everything about this place and am immensely grateful for the wonderful experience. Muchas gracias!🥰

I studied for 3 weeks at this school with my amazing teacher Eduardo in January. Started with 0 spanish, and I am now able to understand, respond and really communicate with locals and other travellers in Spanish. The view while studying is amazing and every day they spoil us with different snacks. There's also activities included in the school many days of the week. I also stayed with a local family for my 3 weeks, and my host mom Juanita cooked the most delicious meals every day and made me feel so welcome right from the start. Can't recommend this school enough and would have stayed longer if I could've. Gracias Eduardo y todo el equipo por la experience increíble. ❤️

We have just enjoyed a very nice week of Spanish lessons in San Pedro. We had lessons in groups of 2 with 4 friends. We learned a lot and we had lessons from the good, sweet and bromista teachers Idalia and Fredy. Eduardo arranged the contact very well and also all (free) fun outings such as cocoa tour, Mayan painting lesson, salsa and kayaking.
The stay with the host family with host mother Juanita was very nice. She took good care of us and made us delicious food 3 times a day. We had pleasant double bedrooms. It was also very nice that we were able to attend eldest daughter Jasmin's birthday.
All in all a very nice experience with a very good price-quality ratio!

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Guatemaya Spanish Academy. Eduardo, José, and the rest of the staff have created a very approachable curriculum, and they are some of the kindest people I have ever met. Surrounded by the beautiful landscape of the lake, learning spanish was a breeze. I can’t wait to return to see my new friends once again :)
