I had no idea that it was possible to make embroidery that is a multi-dimensional work of art. Words fail when describing the detail and workmanship in the display pieces. And the more affordable items are equally lovely

This is a great opportunity to learn about one of the 4 types of embroidery created in China. Unfortunately the museum is pretty much exclusively in Chinese, and although there is a guided tour, this too is in Mandarin. If you speak Mandarin or have a translator with your group, this is a must see. There are three flours that go through the history of the work. It shows the evolution of Xiang embroidery, before and after they invented a stitch which allows their work to be more detailed and intricate.
On the second floor you have the opportunity to observe some women working on the embroidery pieces. They are absolutely breathtaking. Some of the pieces take several months for multiple women to complete. This makes the really detailed pieces super expensive as the women can only work for several decades before their eyes and hands don't let them create the pieces to the same level. The second floor continues the evolution of the techniques, but shows large pieces that the people are very proud of. Some would retail for over several million yuan.
On the third floor you have the opportunity to buy some exquisite pieces, but the price is exorbitant. It's a nice place to look but you can't take photos once you reach the third floor because the items there are for sale. If you go back to the first floor you can purchase items of a lower quality for a cheaper price. They are still pricey compared to other places, but you know the history of the pieces and that they are endemic to that region and culture.

湘绣，汉族优秀的民族传统工艺之一，与苏绣、蜀绣、粤绣齐名，为中国四大名绣之一。这块地就像一座别致的庭院，不收门票，随意游览，但是博物馆还是很正规的，古香古色，再陈列着这么美的绣品，真是大开眼界，动物的绣品很活灵活现，一些老照片也看的出湘绣的历史和传承。

We went to Hunan Embroidery Museum on 13 September 2014 by tour group. When we stepped into the room, we were surprised to see a big art piece of embroidery of tigers. Very beautiful and excellent handwork. The tigers' eyes were so realistic. But we were not allowed to take a photograph of it. We understood they took many months to do that embroidery. There was another piece. they could embroider one side of the screen, a tiger, and the other side of the same screen, a peacock. Impressive Work!

Having been there before (2003) it was a must to come back. And the Hunan embroidery was as impressive as before! But I missed access to the workshop - also there were bit fewer pieces of embroidery on display. And just about everything seemed to be for sale (?) I hope it wasn't for Hunan embroidery is truly ART!
