I have spent many a Saturday night attending shows at the Keller and recently noticed that I have never had a great experience. Specifically never had that magic theatre moment when you are transported somewhere else and mesmerized. So I thought I would take a moment and note why. First the venue is laid out wrong for live theater. The house feels too wide, balcony too far back from the stage, and the odd reflective wood boarder pulls focus every time a light gets too close. The sound system is lacking the finesse needed for dialog and much of the story is lost to the echo chamber that is this auditorium. Lastly I think that Portland audience are just not very good. From late comers being escorted to their seats halfway through the opening number, the worlds loudest plastic wrapped cookies being sold in the lobby, or the light that fills the auditorium every time someone gets up to use the restroom, there are just too many distractions. In the latest show we saw there you could see the actors notice people fleeing out the back door before the curtain call just to beat traffic. I think lastly shows at the Keller are just overpriced, I recently took a trip to NYC for a week, saw 12 Broadway shows. I paid $250 a flight (round trip) and paid on average $65 a show at the box office. I have paid more than that to see lesser productions at a his venue. We are not a small town full of people that have never see world class art, we can and should do better.

The seats were very comfortable & we had a great view of the stage, but the acoustics were terrible. One of my companions was unfamiliar with the production & she missed out on some of the dialogue & humor.

So much is going for this performance center, but it is all washed away by the acoustics. Attend for a handsome venue, a delightful night out, and/or a show you simply can't miss. But be aware and be sure: you will miss up to a half of what is spoken and sung. If your hearing isn't perfect you may not understand three-quarters of the play or concert. It's a pity but a locally well-known fact.

We've been season ticket holders for Broadway plays for a few years and the we have really enjoyed it. As with many public venues, the number of women's restrooms could be improved particularly since they allow bringing food &drink into the venue. **Tip: if you want to pick up a drink/snack at the intermission, pay prior to the show & they'll have it out for you, no waiting in line!

I watched "Moulin Rouge." Awesome show, an awesome venue, and awesome staff. But they did not allow re-entry during intermission! That's right! So if I wanted to go outside, get some fresh air during intermission, or stretch my legs, I could NOT get back inside for the second half! So, instead, they kept me in the lobby area, with people talking loudly, coughing, seeing and sucking in people's air - a covid petri dish to be sure! Either stay away, or be prepared. NO RE-ENTRY

I bought season tickets this year specifically to see Hamilton. The cast got the flu and 4 shows were rescheduled. They rescheduled only one show and they did it on a weekday midday. Many of us were unable to go. And those that were able had to pay more for seat changes or couldn’t get seats at all since the Keller thought it was acceptable to replace 4 full shows with only one. This is terrible and I will no longer be supporting the Keller auditorium after this abysmal customer service fiasco. If I could rate zero stars, I would. I’m incredibly disappointed.

I went to see Mean Girls on Nov 13, 2021. Sat in aisle C, row Q; very good seats. The performances and stagecraft were very good and the scene-changing video effects were especially impressive. However, the sound was a problem. Much of the dialogue and musical lyrics were lost in the loud cacophony of the chorus and orchestra. Many of the jokes fell flat as the audience could not hear or understand the dialogue. (I experienced the same problem at the Keller years ago at the show Rent.) Only when the volume level of the orchestra was low or during a quiet solo were the lines comprehensible. I don't know if this is a problem with the Keller's inherent acoustics or the sound engineers' ability to craft good balanced sound. But when you walk out of the Keller after watching a well-produced musical but knowing that you missed half of the script and most of the humor, the overall feeling is disappointment.

Long time season ticket holder. Shows are great, but be prepared that you are going to be extremely frustrated with the support and the administration of the organization. Very difficult and it gets worse every year.

Great venue but the seats are uncomfortable! Especially for sitting quietly for 2.5 hours or more. Saw Miss Siagon and the sound was difficult to follow along with the singing, and not even going to discuss accessing a bathroom during intermission, sheesh!

I've been to the Keller Auditorium many times, this time for Madame Butterfly, and, as ever, the performance was outstanding. I've been to the Met, too, and the cast in Madame Butterfly could easily sing at the Met - they were that good. Unfortunately, and for reasons I just don't understand, this wonderful venue spends next to nothing on food and drink. Why? Every ballpark in America makes money hand over fist with concessions while the Keller offers cookies, pretzels, et al instead of delectable finger foods that they could charge mightily for and sell out. The same can be said for their drink offerings. I'm not suggesting they open a fully stocked bar, but red, white or water leaves everything to be desired. Still, you go there for the performances and they never disappoint, so eat before or after and enjoy the performances. Someday they'll wise up and stop missing out on all the money they are leaving in patron pockets.

Thank you for your review of the Keller Auditorium! We are so thrilled that you enjoyed Portland Opera's Madama Butterfly with us! We do have various concessions available throughout the Keller, and our Keller Cafe is open 90 minutes prior to evening performances of the Oregon Ballet Theatre, Portland Opera and Broadway in Portland. You can see the current menus on our website. We offer a full bar at our Martini Bar, also located inside the Keller Auditorium. We hope that you'll join us for another performance soon! You can make reservations for the Keller Cafe by calling 503.432.2908 or online at our website. Thank you!

I have friends that pre-order their food and drinks but I never have, so I would call Keller and they could tell you what to do.
