Lots of history with the exhibits on display outside. The museum itself was closed for the winter so check their website before going.

Fun stop after Tuckaleechee caverns, always cool to see some area history proudly displayed and trains are always awesome. It’s a free small museum with donations welcome and a gift shop. Great photos of the area history there, and a remote control model train to play with!

Boring in the off season. Museum & gift shop are not open in March. There are only 3 things to look at. A train, a steam machine thing and a logger. Pretty boring. My 3 year old was disappointed you cannot go inside of the train, and there is nothing to really 'play' on.

First of all it’s free. It’s also a time capsule of history there about the railroad and the logging industry. It’s well worth a stop if you have the time. Generally a half hour or so is enough before you move on to other activities such as Cades Cove, etc. There were a couple of families with children who seemed to love the old train there. That was nice to see.

This is an interesting logging railway / lumber museum covering the local railroad and lumber industry. Loved the Shay locomotive that was on display and other equipment. I found out that the Shay locomotive actually ran in this area.
The old train station was full of interesting equipment that outlined the history of the logging railroad industry in the Townsend area. It had a nice mix of old railroad and logging equipment that kept my Grandkids interested as well. It's not a large museum, but you cannot beat the price (free). Help support the museum by visiting the gift shop.

The museum is free! Perfect stop with kids. Staff is friendly and can answer any type of kid's questions. The kids can try out the lantern and check out a few trains.

We stopped here while in Townsend. We were there in early November during the week. They were closed so we just walked around and took photos. This was a great place to stretch your legs and check out some train engines. If they had been open you could go in some buildings

This little railroad museum was one of the highlights of our trip to the smoky mountains this year. My youngest son actually found the museum last year during our 2020 trip. He found it by seeing the locomotive and other railroad equipment that they had in the yard. We stopped by, which happened to be on a Tuesday, and found out that they are only open on the weekends in November, so we promised the little guy we would go through the inside part of the museum this year when we returned this past weekend.

The museum itself is quite small but packed with the history of Townsend and the railroad that was its lively hood before the place was bought and turned into a National Park. We learned so much and it gave us an appreciation for the people of Townsend and the Smoky Mountains itself.

If your a history or railroad buff, like My sons me I are, you will have a good time. The staff was wonderful and delightful to talk to, and knew their stuff. (The lady working there even told us about some lesser known places to visit, like a swinging bridge not far from the museum).

Next to the museum is a tiny gift shop. The things they sell help keep the place open, and the good thing is we were not pushed, or asked, to buy anything, we just did to help them out. The best part of the place is your free to move around the grounds and look and stay as long as you like.

We found out from the staff that the place is open almost everyday in the summer months. They just open on the weekends in Nov. after that they are closed til March. Just information that may be helpful to some folks who are reading this review.

Lastly we will definitely come back next year and will be bringing some friends and family.

If you like trains, then you may like this free museum. The collection is located indoors and outdoors. Bathrooms are available. The one part of the train we viewed is well-conserved. Stop in to learn about the technology, history, and culture.
