This dive experience of the reef off of this tiny island is one that will please folks who want simple and hearfelt hospitality along with a beautiful reef experience. Our dive master, Ollie told us he chose diving because he loves the ocean and his style of leading taught us that slow is best as you can see everything.
New owner Ken Chaletzky was directing improvements to the shop and the adjacent restaurant soon to open while we were there. It was fun to see someone living a lifelong dream and young Elliott, Ollie's nephew and dive-master-in training seemed to be everwhere helping. All of the sites we dove were 15 minutes or closer to the shop and although this time of year the reef is a bit sand blown, visibility was very good and we will be back later in the year.

We went to Salt Cay to scuba dive and snorkel with whales and while the weather and rough seas were not great, our best experience was when we went scuba diving and whale snorkeling with Richard. There were only 2 of the 5 days when Richard was our dive master and captain on the whale snorkel boat and we wished that we had more of his time. Unfortunately, we rented during the week when they had an outside group charter their large boat that was staffed by him and one of his lead guys. Richard scouted our dive site before 7 am that morning before recommending that we make the trip as the visibility was good. He was also amazing at finding whales on our last day on Salt Cay, finding and getting close to multiple whales breaching close to our boat and watching a whale pound the ocean with his tail, many times over. That was a truly memorable day!

This was the absolute highlight of our trip!!!!! Richard is phenomenal-both with skill and knowledge. We will definitely come again and will hopefully complete our scuba certification with him! The whales were amazing. Loved listening to their song.... (the pic shows distant because it’s a GoPro)

Captain Jagan was a super sailor and entertaining host. He put us on whales and gave us the chance to snorkel with them. It was amazing. We have been on several similar whale watching excursions, but none as fun as we had with Salt Cay Divers. You will not go wrong with this tour and to miss out would be a mistake. Great service, great boat, great people!

We stayed on Salt Cay for 2 nights & booked a whale watching tour. We also stayed in the dive guest house, which was spacious & equipped with good wifi & everything we needed. The owners Karen & Dirck helped us every step of the way, from planning advice to picking us up & dropping us off at the airport to arranging a golf cart rental. Richard was able to find us a whale, so we were very happy! Just make sure you confirm your tour date & time with Richard as he is the one who does the scheduling.
Salt Cay is not much of a tourist destination, but if you're looking for an extremely quiet place with nice beaches & friendly locals (donkeys included) you should check it out. It's expensive & hard to get to, but the whale watching is world class. Would like to come back in the future.

I cannot say enough good things about Salt Cay Divers! You will not find a kinder or more marvelous crew of knowledgeable people! It started months before we even arrived. Karen responded to dozens of emails from us and answered every question we had. She was prompt and beyond helpful as well as accommodating.
Once there, Richard the dive master took my wife and I through the open water training with care and some laughs. We felt more confident with each dive. He is a patient and good teacher. His assistant Elliot is always there to help you with your tanks or gear. Elliot and Richard are a spectacular team! We felt safe because of how attentive they both are. We simply fell in love with our guides and this crew!
The diving is fantastic! We saw and swam with humpbacks on a whale watching trip. We saw eels, octopus, sharks, rays, turtles, barracuda, puffer fish and so much more on our dives. One of the best parts is that all the dives are within about a 10 minute boat ride of the harbor. This gives you the benefit of being able to come in and get off the boat for a few while you decompress before a second dive.
If you’re thinking of going to Salt Cay and your on the edge let me push you over. My wife and I will be going back to finish our advanced dive training here. We travel frequently, (14 countries in the last 4 years) and we rarely go to the same place twice but we are already planning a second trip to Salt Cay.
Salt Cay is like stepping back in time. Donkeys and cows cause the only traffic on the roads and golf carts are the preferred rental car of the island. If the beach is crowded it’s because your sharing it with two other people.
If your looking for a place to stay, the nicest place is also run through the dive shop and it’s currently being remodeled and updated to perfection. Ask them about rooming, golf cart rental and of course diving, snorkeling, and whale watching. The dive shop is the hub of the community and one of the best experiences my wife and I have ever had traveling. Go! Dive, rest and relax.
Oh and if you’re hungry the Corral Reef Restaurant is connected to the dive shop and right on the water at the harbor. Ask Antonia if she’ll cook you a authentic Dominican dinner with coconut flan for dessert! It’s to die for! Enjoy and tip big!

Our trip was 29 January to 5 February to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary by whale watching and snorkeling in a small group. We were lucky enough to arrive for the grand opening and maiden cruise on the newest boat. For our excursion we were two of four watchers. Richard was able to get close to several groups of whales and we were lucky enough to be in the water with our snorkeling gear to have the whales swim under us. An unforgettable once in a life time experience. As part of the grand opening the owners hosted a social in the evening with snacks so we were able to meet some of the other locals and business operators. A few days later Elliot took us to Gibbs Cay with one other couple to swim with the rays. Another adventure that was very successful. We loved the small groups and attention to detail. Because Salt Cay is very small with no banks everyone does business in cash. We were concerned about lack of funds and a ruined cell phone(my fault)might prevent us from paying for our Gibbs Cay excursion. Owner, Karen was so amazing. Reassuring us that we could pay we were got back home. As it did turn out we were able to pay before we left. Everyone at Salt Cay Divers and Salt Cay in general were so amazing and helpful. This place is so unique and well worth a visit.

This was our 4th time diving on Salt Cay, and my wife hit her 100th dive during this trip. Richard is the best dive master we have ever had. He makes getting in and out of the water super easy and dives are very relaxing. He is also a great guide, how he is able to find tiny things like a lettuce sea slug is beyond me. My wife was hoping to see an octopus (something we have not seen before) and sure enough, Richard found one!!! If your interested in seeing some reef sharks, this is the place to dive. We seen sharks on about every dive on the north side, getting within about 10 feet of some 6 footers...it was awesome!!!
Karen also made our arrangements for staying at a unit called Harborside house. It was located across the street from the dive shop so could not have been handier for diving. It was a very nice and clean two bedroom unit that was just recently remodeled. The kitchen had all new cabinets - very nice. Also, they actually cleared probably about 100 feet of brush when they repaired the sea wall of the harbor, giving the house an ocean view. After our last dive, we was sitting on the porch of the house having coffee and see several whale spouts straight out from us. What a great end to our diving trip!
Karen also made our arrangements for staying at a unit called Harborside house. It was located across the street from the dive shop so could not have been handier for diving. It was a very nice and clean two bedroom unit that was just recently remodeled. The kitchen had all new cabinets - very nice. Thanks for writing such a glowing review. We appreciate it when guests take the time to write. As a returning guest, you probably noticed all the investments we are making to improve our visitors' experiences. Hopefully, you were there to see the arrival of our new dive/whale watching boat. We've also bought a lot of new dive gear. We renovated, due to damage from the new and much needed seawall, our bar area at the Coral Reef.
And then there's Harbourside House, our newly acquired two-unit residence. The renovations are not quite complete but when we're done, both units will have new upscale kitchens and bathrooms, as well as a freshening up throughout. We're glad you enjoyed your stay.
But all of this would be unimportant without our great staff, starting with Richard our much beloved divemaster. He makes everyone feel special. I love diving with him, too. We can go to the same spot and he makes it seem new.
We look forward to your next visit.

I have just returned from a week of great diving with Salt Cay Divers. It is off season so I had the opportunity to dive with just the staff of Richard and Elliott, both of whom did a super job and provided valet dive services. We had fun visiting their favorite sites and seeing some magnificent coral. We were accompanied by sharks on most dives with a scattering of rays, eels, and turtles. All of the sites were within a 10 minute boat ride and we came back to the shop for our surface interval. The reef runs along a wall that goes down forever, there were neat spots where we could skydive off the wall to shelves at 100 feet then return to 30 feet for reef sightseeing.
Salt Cay itself is charming, maybe 75 full time residents and not that many cars. No cruise ships but a brand new runway and the sea wall that protects the dive shop and ferry is being rebuilt after suffering storm damage. There are donkeys wandering around and everyone knows everyone else. A lot of history on a little piece of off the beaten path paradise.

My wife and I have dove in many places but rarley do you find an owner and dive master as fun to dive with as Richard is. The equiptment is new and in good shape and Richard makes sure the dive groups are small and personal. We dove 4 times with him and he never hurried the dives and made sure we were comfortable and enjoying ourselves.

What is the typical dress code for the restaurants? Is it casual beach wear (shorts, t-shirts and flip flops) or do men/boys need collared shirts, pants, closed toe shoes?

If someone walked in with collared shirts and closed shoes we would think they must be going to a wedding or funeral:) Please, bring your most comfortable close and flip flogs, relax and enjoy our excellent food while watching for the elusive Green flash seen from Coral Reef bar and grill
